The Federal Office for Viticulture in Eisenstadt (BAWB) is the authority of first instance for the state inspection number procedure and is also an EU-recognized accredited testing body. Equipped with all standard testing procedures, the office is among the modern wine testing centers in Europe.

The main task of the BAWB is quality testing within the state inspection number procedure for wine, fruit wine, and sparkling wine. Reviewing samples from the Federal Cellar Inspection is also a central responsibility of the office. Organizationally, the institute is divided into two institutes (State Inspection Number Viticulture and Research) and four branch offices (Krems, Poysdorf, Retz, and Silberberg).

In addition to control activities and quality testing in the wine sector, key focuses include advising the wine industry and conducting research across the entire field of oenology.

The research focuses on three main areas:

  • Vine development and health
  • Wine microbiology
  • Wine chemistry
