Norbert Totschnig has been Federal Minister for Agriculture and Forestry, Climate and Environmental Protection, Regions and Water Management since March 2025. Born on June 6, 1974, in Lienz, Tyrol, he grew up with several siblings on his parents’ farm—shaped by a sense of responsibility, solidarity, and common sense. Education was central in his family: after graduating from the Higher Technical Institute (HTL) in Bregenz, he studied International Economics in Innsbruck and at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid. His experience abroad significantly broadened his perspective on society and politics.

Starting in 2011, he was responsible for coordinating agricultural and environmental policy in the Parliamentary Group of the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP). From 2013 onward, Totschnig worked as a budget officer for former Vice Chancellor Dr. Michael Spindelegger at the Federal Ministry of Finance, and later as a policy advisor to former Vice Chancellor Mister Reinhold Mitterlehner at the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy. In August 2017, he was appointed Director of the Austrian Farmers’ Association in Vienna. Finally, in May 2022, he was appointed Federal Minister at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Regions and Water Management.

For him, the eco-social market economy provides the framework for political action: economic strength, ecological responsibility, and social justice must be brought into harmony. His politics are based on clear values: subsidiarity, volunteerism, solidarity, education, and the goal of ensuring quality of life in all regions of Austria.

His key priorities include ensuring the supply of high-quality food, clean drinking water, and renewable resources, as well as achieving environmental and climate targets based on sustainable economic growth, active and effective climate protection, and the expansion of the circular economy. Economically prosperous regions secure jobs and ensure the active management of cultural landscapes as well as the preservation of Austria’s diverse protected areas.

Norbert Totschnig is married and the father of two children.
