The Federal Forests Act of 1996 provided for the separation of the Austrian Federal Forests from the federal administration and the establishment of the Austrian Federal Forests AG.

Tasks

Austrian Federal Forests AG conducts its business in accordance with economic principles, carries out real estate transactions, and manages properties owned by the Federal Government. The utilisation and marketing of timber and non-timber forest products are intended to achieve the best possible economic results. At the same time, the fulfilment of these tasks is considered to be of significant public interest.

Objectives

The main objectives include:

  • the sustainable management of forests;

  • the protection of drinking water and other water resources;

  • the preservation of ecologically valuable areas and natural monuments;

  • participation in the management of national park areas;

  • ecologically balanced game management; and

  • safeguarding existing rights of common use of forest land (Einforstungsrechte).

Further Provisions

The Federal Forests Act 1996 also contains provisions governing the management and use of land, hunting and fishing lease agreements, the company's right of usufruct, and personnel matters.
