Procedure

The application is submitted online via the EAP (Single Point of Contact) or directly to the Ministry of Agriculture. If the application is submitted in connection with an application for an advertised position, it may also be submitted directly to the relevant school at the same time as the job application.

The Ministry of Agriculture examines the application and issues a decision by official notice within four months of receiving all required documents. An appeal against the decision may be lodged with the Federal Administrative Court within four weeks of notification of the decision.

The procedure determines whether the applicant meets the professional requirements for practising the relevant teaching profession. It also examines whether the applicant has direct access to the profession in their country of origin.

If there are substantial differences between the applicant’s training and the training required in Austria, compensatory measures may be imposed in the form of an aptitude test or an adaptation period. In this assessment, any professional experience acquired or knowledge, skills and competencies gained through lifelong learning are taken into account.

For qualifications obtained outside the EU, the EEA or Switzerland (third-country qualifications), an application for nostrification must be submitted to a university.

Required Documents

  • Passport or identity card

  • In the event of a change of name: marriage certificate or other documents proving the name change

  • Certificates of professional competence or training qualifications obtained in the EU, the EEA or Switzerland that demonstrate the applicant’s qualifications for the teaching profession, together with any additional professional experience required. Certificates of professional competence or training qualifications that are not in German or English must also be submitted with a translation by a court-certified translator.

  • Documents confirming the duration and scope of studies (Diploma Supplement or diploma appendix)

  • Where available, documents demonstrating the language skills required to practise the profession in Austria

  • Third-country diplomas recognised in the EU, the EEA or Switzerland, together with a certificate from the competent authority confirming at least three years of professional experience in that member state

  • Where available, documents relating to acquired professional experience that clearly describe the applicant’s professional activities, or evidence of knowledge, skills and competencies acquired through lifelong learning

  • A certificate confirming that the applicant has not been temporarily or permanently prohibited from practising the profession and has no criminal convictions

  • Additional requirements for third-country nationals: proof of residence entitlement and evidence of unrestricted access to the labour market (also applicable to Croatian nationals)
