To ensure that water and water bodies meet the high standards of the environment and consumers, research, analysis, and monitoring are necessary. The Federal Office for Water Management (Federal Office for Water Management) develops the decision-making foundations for addressing water management challenges.

The main objective of the Federal Office for Water Management (BAW) is to support the Federal Ministry responsible for water in all areas of national and international water management. The office develops technical foundations for legislation and enforcement, prepares expert reports, provides consulting services, and is responsible for professional training and continuing education in fisheries.

The BAW’s expertise is also available to federal states and municipalities. Private individuals, associations, and institutions can likewise receive professional advice. As a partner of European administrative and research institutions, the BAW participates in international projects and studies to identify future developments.

The Federal Office consists of three institutes:

  • Institute for Aquatic Ecology and Fisheries in Scharfling (Upper Austria)
  • Institute for Land Improvement and Soil-Water Management in Petzenkirchen (Lower Austria)
  • Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Hydrometric Testing in Vienna
