Higher Federal Teaching and Research Institute and Federal Office for Viticulture and Fruit Growing
The Higher Federal Teaching and Research Institute and Federal Office in Klosterneuburg is the oldest and largest research center for viticulture and fruit growing in Austria. The institute has vineyards, orchards, laboratories, as well as a wine technology and fruit processing center available for scientific work.
The expertise of the HBLA and Federal Office for Viticulture and Fruit Growing encompasses research, studies, and innovations aimed at improving agricultural products, particularly in terms of quality and nutritional value. Resource management, sustainability, and climate change are central to their work.
Research areas include quality improvement, organic production, integrated pest management, biodiversity, origin and authenticity assurance, and the breeding of resistant varieties. In viticulture, vineyard mechanics is also included.
Through new cultivars, clones, and selections, the research institute has significantly contributed over the past decades to ensuring that Austrian viticulture remains competitive in Europe and globally. The Cellar Management Department focuses on wine quality through optimized processing and the development and application of suitable aging methods.
The main goal of research in fruit growing is to identify ways to produce healthy, high-quality fruit in a profitable and environmentally friendly manner.
The research institute and Federal Office, together with the Higher Federal Teaching and Research Institute for Viticulture and Fruit Growing, form a department of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.
