The increasing demand for land for construction, transport and recreation is leading to the rapid loss of biologically productive soils. This impairs soil functions such as water storage, food production and biodiversity. The consequences include an increased risk of flooding, reduced dust retention and more pronounced heat effects caused by soil sealing.
