Federal Waste Management Plan

The Federal Waste Management Plan is an important planning instrument for waste management in Austria. It is prepared on the basis of the Waste Management Act 2002 and published at least every six years. The Federal Waste Management Plan 2023 represents the seventh update. It shows which waste management measures have been implemented to date and how effective they have been. While the Federal Waste Management Plan is published every six years, the annual status reports provide data and facts on waste generation and treatment.

The Federal Waste Management Plan includes, among other things:

• an inventory of waste management in Austria,
• an assessment of the future development of waste streams,
• the regional distribution of facilities for the disposal and recovery of waste,
• the evaluation of existing collection systems and separate collection,
• requirements for waste prevention, reuse and recycling,
• requirements for the environmentally sound disposal of waste that cannot be avoided or recovered,
• requirements for the shipment of waste to or from Austria,
• measures against littering,
• strategies for specific types of waste such as waste oil, hazardous waste, packaging, biodegradable waste and single-use plastic products.

It provides an overview of the current situation of waste management and shows which developments can be expected in the future. It therefore forms the basis for organised, environmentally sound and effective waste management in Austria.
