Kostbar Market Kick-off

The Kostbar Market has officially launched: The online platform commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture connects surplus food from agriculture, production, and retail with those who urgently need it. The platform is operated by Unverschwendet GmbH and, following a successful pilot phase, is now being rolled out nationwide across Austria.

During the pilot phase alone, 824 tonnes of food were redistributed to more than 80 charitable non-profit organisations across Austria – equivalent to around 1.6 million meals (500 g per meal). The Kostbar Market supports social organisations, reduces food waste, and facilitates the redistribution of surplus food that is still fit for consumption. The BMLUK project demonstrates how environmental protection, domestic agriculture, social responsibility, and digital innovation can work together. Its goal is to save even more valuable food from going to waste and to support people throughout Austria.

Businesses with surplus food as well as social organisations can register free of charge at https://app.kostbarmarkt.at/ (Website in German only) to post or accept offers. The Kostbar Market team can be reached at hi@kostbarmarkt.at or +43 660 1024585 (Monday to Friday, on working days, 9:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.).
