klimaaktiv as a flagship initiative

The climate protection initiative klimaaktiv is part of Austria’s national climate strategy. It serves as a platform for initiatives by companies, federal states and municipalities, organizations, as well as private individuals.
Since 2004, klimaaktiv has been addressing the key technology areas of sustainable energy use through its focus on four core topics: building and renovation, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and mobility. It serves as a platform for initiatives by companies, federal states and municipalities, organizations, and private individuals.
The initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by increasing the market share of climate-friendly technologies and services that meet high and verified quality standards. It promotes the intensified use of renewable energy sources, enhances the energy efficiency of buildings, technical processes, and devices, and supports the shift toward sustainable mobility.
klimaaktiv activates key levers by offering advisory, information, and training initiatives, establishing transparent standards, implementing quality assurance measures, and engaging relevant stakeholders – such as businesses, regional and local authorities – while also working closely with funding programs.
In 2011, klimaaktiv was recognized as a Europe-wide best practice example in the category “Going Green: Concrete Solutions from the Public Sector” as part of the European Public Sector Award (EPSA).
klimaaktiv pact2020
Eleven well-known Austrian companies voluntarily committed to a climate pact for large enterprises, aiming between 2005 and 2020 to:
-
reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 34 percent by 2020,
-
increase the share of renewable energy in their total energy consumption to 50 percent,
-
improve their energy efficiency by 30 percent, and
-
cover 14 percent of their mobility energy demand with renewable fuels or energy sources.
Since the baseline year 2005, these companies have already reduced their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 700,000 tons. Their CO2 reduction target by 2020 is 1.36 million tons, which corresponds to approximately 90,000 tons of CO2 saved annually.
klimaaktiv mobil Funding Program
Transport in Austria is 93 percent dependent on petroleum and accounts for about one-third of CO2 emissions. The klimaaktiv mobil funding program provides financial support for climate-friendly mobility measures. More than 5,700 klimaaktiv mobil project partners save 590,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually, contributing to the success of Austria’s and Europe’s climate protection goals.
With funding totaling nearly 75 million euros, an investment volume of around 500 million euros has been triggered, creating and securing approximately 5,800 green jobs. Additionally, the "Masterplan Cycling 2015–2025" continues to offer advice, funding, and awareness-raising efforts to promote cycling as a key factor for the economy and public health.
