Environmental Information Directive 2003/4/EC
Directive 90/313/EEC initiated a transformation regarding the way authorities deal with openness and transparency by introducing measures to exercise the public’s right of access to environmental information, a process that should be expanded and continued. Directive 2003/4/EC further extends this granted access.

The objective of the Environmental Information Directive is:

To guarantee the right of access to environmental information that is held by authorities or made available to them, and

To ensure that environmental information is naturally made publicly accessible and disseminated, in order to achieve the most comprehensive and systematic availability and distribution of environmental information to the public.
How was the Environmental Information Directive implemented in Austria?
The implementation of the Environmental Information Directive in Austria was carried out at the federal level through the amendment of the Environmental Information Act and at the state level through the amendment of the corresponding environmental information, inquiry, or environmental protection laws.
