In the case of emergency, the situation must be grasped as soon as possible in order to be able to take the respective measures for the protection of the population. Measures on the spot and the evaluation of samples constitute an important basis for this purpose.

According to the Strahlenschutzgesetz 2020 (Radiation Protection Act 2020) the national emergency plan must contain also a sampling plan for samples from the environment, feedstuffs and foodstuffs for various types of radiological emergencies.

Objective of the document “Sampling plan: Organisation and implementation of sampling, sample transport, measurements and transfer of measuring data in the case of small- and large-scale radioactive contamination” is a harmonisation of measuring and sampling concepts, as well as of the transfer of measuring data in order to receive data which are comparable on an Austria-wide scale as a basis for decisions on measures.

The sampling plan was worked out by a working group of the National Crisis and Disaster Management (SKKM), with the participation of representatives of the federal government and the Federal Provinces, and updated in 2020.
