Under the Food Supply Management Act, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture has the authority to implement measures for a wide range of crisis situations. Current developments are continuously monitored and assessed to ensure that the appropriate instruments can be activated promptly whenever necessary.

In general, Austria has a high degree of self-sufficiency in staple foods, and the supply of both food and drinking water is secure now and is expected to remain so in the future.

Food Supply Management Act

The Food Supply Management Act provides the legal framework for a range of measures designed to ensure an adequate supply of food for the Austrian population and to safeguard the uninterrupted production and distribution of food. In cases of absolute necessity, these measures may also include the rationing of food distribution. The specific measures implemented depend on the nature and severity of the situation.

Federal Steering Committee

The Federal Steering Committee is a body composed of representatives of the federal ministries, the federal provinces, municipalities, the social partners, Agrarmarkt Austria, and the political parties represented in the National Council.

The committee was established to review draft regulations, advise on other implementation measures, and issue recommendations aimed at safeguarding Austria's food supply through preventive action. The Steering Committee meets at least once a year and may also be convened whenever circumstances require.
