EU Innovation Fund

The EU funding programme for innovative demonstration projects
The EU Innovation Fund supports demonstration projects in the field of innovative technologies and groundbreaking industrial innovations aimed at reducing CO₂ emissions from 2020 to 2030.
A total of at least 450 million emission allowances from the EU Emissions Trading System will be made available for projects in areas such as energy-intensive industries, renewable energy generation, carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), and energy storage. Depending on the price of the emission allowances, this corresponds to a minimum of €38 billion in funding.
To this end, two calls for proposals are planned each year until 2030: one in autumn for projects with a capital expenditure (CAPEX) of more than Euro €7.5 million, and one in spring for projects with a CAPEX of less than Euro 7.5 million.
Note
Under the EU Innovation Fund, projects with a capital expenditure (CAPEX) of over Euro 7.5 million can receive funding for up to 60 percent of both investment and operating costs. For projects with a CAPEX of less than Euro 7.5 million, up to 60 percent of investment costs are eligible for funding.
Project proposals must be submitted, and the selection process is carried out directly at the EU level. The EU Innovation Fund is a funding instrument of the European Commission, which is supported in the implementation of the funding by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) and the European Investment Bank (EIB).
