To achieve the ambitious climate and energy targets set at international, European, and national levels, it is necessary to utilize all renewable energy sources and to promote innovation, market transition, and further integration into the energy mix. In addition to hydropower, photovoltaics, and wind energy, biogenic energy sources such as biomass and biogas play an important role. As natural energy storage systems, they can help both to provide flexible energy supply (especially biomass as a green energy storage solution) and to create a renewable balance between supply and demand. This is essential, particularly due to the high volatility of solar and wind power.

Biomass can provide heat and cooling, electricity, as well as sustainable biofuels (oil, gas) as needed. Solid biomass, in particular, makes a substantial contribution to the domestic energy mix.

Biomass or biogenic energy sources are generally understood to mean non-fossil organic (animal, plant, human) materials that can be used for energy generation (electricity, heat, fuel). This includes, for example, wood chips, waste wood, pellets, and residues from agriculture and forestry. Biomass can be solid or liquid in its basic form, and gaseous after certain processing steps.
