The Environmental Umbrella Organization (UWD), based in Vienna, is a non-partisan platform for 39 environmental and nature conservation organizations or Alpine clubs from across Austria, representing around 1.3 million members.

The Environmental Umbrella Organization (UWD), which currently has 36 member organizations, was founded in 1973 as the Austrian Society for Nature and Environmental Protection (ÖGNU). The organization’s work today focuses on the sustainable protection of water resources, full commitment to climate protection and renewable energy, advocacy for domestic protected areas, the preservation of genetic, species, and ecosystem diversity, and the further development of Austria’s sustainability strategy.

At the UWD headquarters, a young and dedicated team handles tasks including project and public relations work, association management, and lobbying. The Environmental Umbrella Organization is led by a volunteer board. Key areas of the UWD also include CIPRA Austria with the Alpine Convention Office, the EU Environmental Office, and the Environmental Education Forum.
