Austrian nuclear liability law is more favourable for injured parties than the international nuclear liability regime.
Austria is a party to the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS, BGBl. III number 39/1998).
With some 100 reactors, approximately one third of reactors worldwide is in operation in the European Union.
Towards a European nuclear safety system
From the very beginning of its membership in the European Union, Austria has supported a reform of the Euratom Treaty and has repeatedly launched reform initiatives of its own. A reform concept presented to the public in May 2021 remains relevant to this day. Unfortunately, there has never been sufficient support from the other Member States (MS).
