Intervention Ordinance 2020 (IntV 2020)

The Ordinance contains provisions for radiation protection measures in the case of events such as accidents in nuclear power stations, transport accidents with sources of radiation or terrorist scenarios with radioactive substances.
Intervention Ordinance 2020 (IntV 2020)
The Ordinance on Interventions in Emergency Exposure Situations and in Existing Exposure Situations Following a Radiological Emergency or Due to Contaminated Goods or Due to Contaminated Radioactive Sites (Intervention Ordinance 2020 - IntV 2020) contains essential regulations for protective measures in the case of events, such as nuclear power plant accidents, transport accidents involving radiation sources, or terrorist scenarios involving radioactive substances, and was published in Federal Law Gazette II No. 343/2020 and entered into force on 1 August 2020.
In the event of a radiological emergency, such as after a nuclear power plant accident, the Radiation Protection Act 2020 and the Intervention Ordinance 2020 form the legal basis for the efficient implementation of protective measures for the population. The Intervention Ordinance 2020 contains the following key provisions:
- Definition of criteria, where measures for the protection of the population such as staying in buildings or taking potassium iodide tablets have to be taken into consideration,
- List of potential protective measures,
- Provisions for the preparation of emergency plans at national and at provincial levels,
- Provisions on the information of the population if such an event occurs,
- Definition of the training and the equipment and/or of the physical and medical surveillance of the “emergency staff” carrying out the emergency measures in the concrete event,
- Reference values of the maximum dose for emergency staff.
