All information on contaminated sites and assessed old landfills/contaminated sites in Austria is collected and centrally accessible via the altlasten.gv.at portal. The website also offers a directory with detailed information on the type and extent of environmental contamination and a geographical information system (GIS) that spatially represents all identified contaminated sites and assessed old landfills/contaminated sites.
The following key provisions have been changed by the amendment to the ALSAG (Assessment of Waste Management Act), which came into force on January 1, 2025:
- Consideration of site- and use-specific factors
- Increased transparency through digitalization
- Suspected site register goes offline – public query expanded
- Mobilization of brownfield sites previously used for commercial/industrial purpose
