Green Finance Alliance - Executive Summary
The financial system is a key lever for climate protection and the sus tainable transformation of the economy and the society. The European Green Deal forms the basis for this change. The goal is to make the EU the first climate-neutral continent by 2050 by achieving net-zero green house gas emissions. At the same time, the EU aims to become a fair and prosperous society with a modern, resource-efficient, and competi tive economy by decoupling economic growth from resource use. Imme diate action is needed to achieve this. Decisive measures have therefore been adopted at EU level. With the European Climate Law, the EU has committed itself to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. Based on the “Fit for 55” package, a coherent framework for achieving climate targets in all rele vant sectors was subsequently created. This requires significant invest ment from both the public and private sectors.
Austria's goal of climate neutrality by 2040 implies substantial invest ments in the decarbonisation of the economy and society: In order to achieve a significant reduction in greenhouse gases by 2040 (-88 percent), av erage annual total investments of between Euro 46.8 billion and Euro 64.5 billion will be required between 2024 and 2040. This includes addi tional annual climate protection investments of between Euro 6.4 billion and Euro 11.2 billion, corresponding to 1.1 percent to 1.9 percent of the average annual gross domestic product until 2040. The public sector will take further measures to achieve these necessary investments. However, the climate-friendly transformation of the economy and the infrastructure also requires investment, financing, and insurance solu tions from the private sector.
